I earned a B.A. from Florida International University and an M.A. from New York University. After teaching in California for two years, I accepted a full tuition scholarship and Teaching Assistantship to complete my Ph.D. at the University of Miami. I successfully defended my doctoral dissertation and have published scholarly and professional articles in literature and visual arts.
Experience
I have 12 years of experience with tutoring and teaching. As a result, I work well with students, parents, and teachers of all levels in literature, essay composition, language development, critical reading, and university application materials. I am an effective communicator, empathetic to parents’ concerns and understand how high the stakes are for academic success. Currently, I am a Lecturer at the University of Miami. For FIU, I oversee the Literature Dual-Enrollment courses where high school students take courses for college credit in their home schools. I make sure all teachers maintain a college level curriculum. I assist in developing syllabi, reading lists, and grading. I have taught courses from the middle school to the university level on developmental writing, freshman composition, literature, and graduate level political science writing. My educational philosophy focuses on helping students make a personal and critical connection with the subject at hand. Along with assignments for school, I work with students applying to college and graduate school (such as law school and medical school). I am familiar with the detail and candor that should be present in personal statements and effectively foster such work.
